Kyoko Nozaki Discover useful plastic from Harmful Gas CO2

Plastics are almost made 100% from components of fossil resources such as oil.

if it is possible to convert CO2 in the air to usable plastic, that can actually lead to the saving of fossil resources, it is a big plus for the global environment.

The successful production is a new plastic called “polylactone”.

A substance called butadiene is combined with CO 2in a proprietary catalytic technology.

About 30% of the whole is made of components derived from CO 2 and it can be said that it is an environmentally friendly plastic.

Nozaki is also working on research that changes the manufacturing process of chemical products. “Almost 100% of chemical products such as plastics are made from fossil resources.

Chemically, we need a process to add O (oxygen) to C (carbon) and H (hydrogen) that make up fossil resources if so; the same thing should be obtained.

if you subtract O from substances that have excessive O beforehand. It is theoretically possible to make chemical products without using any fossil resources, “said Nozaki.

It is theoretically possible to make chemical products without using any fossil resources, “said Nozaki.

Currently, underway is the development of new chemical reactions that produce chemical products from renewable resources such as biomass and CO 2.

“So far, only the process of making chemical products from fossil resources has been studied, but if you change the starting materials, there should be science that has not been elucidated around them.

Challenge new academic fields, and if we can establish chemical products that do not rely on fossil resources, it will be a step closer to achieving SDGs,” says Nozaki.
